POY Debate: FedExCup Referendum?

You'd think the NFL-sabotaged ratings and need to annually add a tweak/reset would be enough to declare the "playoffs" in need of an overhaul, but maybe we finally have the thing to get them repaired: the player of the year debate.

Doug Ferguson makes the intriguing case that another great week from the red-hot Jason Day could get him a player of the year designation from his peers and confirm the importance of the "playoffs." A vote for Jordan Spieth is a vote for majors and the significance of the year ending at the PGA Championship.

The whole debate starts with the assumption Day will win the Tour Championship, and at the rate he’s been going, that’s not a stretch.

Rickie Fowler said his main criteria would be victories, though not just any title. “Majors. Majors are big,” he said. “With what Jordan’s done this year, it’s pretty amazing. Jason is making his late charge, so he’s not making it any easier on the voting side of it.”

Knowing this, the debate has gotten much easier to take!

Of course, the players, who don't know that anything happened before 2005 when they last read more than a paragraph, may say differently with their vote$. Writers, with the GWAA player of the year award, seem more likely to vote for Spieth, as evidenced by Bob Harig's case at ESPN.com that also includes backing from the likes of Rory McIlroy.

Or, Henrik Stenson could just take the whole thing without winning a tournament and then we could definitely implode Tim Finchem's idea of a (reset) sporting (reset) event.

Or, at least end it by Labor Day.
