PGA At Harding Just The Beginning Of West Coast Majors

Ron Kroichick talks to PGA of America CEO Pete Bevacqua about the PGA coming to Harding Park in 2020.

Besides suggesting the crowds will get to 40,000 a day, Bevacqua says the PGA isn't done looking at west coast venues.

And let’s be honest: It took way too long for the PGA Championship to return to the West Coast. Harding will be the first western venue to host the PGA since Sahalee, outside Seattle, in 1998.

Bevacqua suggested the event could come to the West Coast two or three times per decade. He used to work at the USGA, which now regularly brings the U.S. Open to the Pacific time zone — partly to push telecasts into prime time in the East, thereby increasing ratings.

“We’re looking right now at other great West Coast venues that would work for the PGA Championship,” Bevacqua said. “It’s a strategic priority of ours to make sure the PGA comes to great golf courses like this in this part of the country.”
