Roundup: 2016 U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying

Another grand day with so many stories worth reading about. Congrats to all who finished 36 holes, and especially to all the state and regional golf associations who make the best day in American golf click. And of course, to the qualifiers who've earned the right to...take on glorious Oakmont.

But don't take my word for it, check out all the great reading at Golfweek.com with their roundup page here.

If you just want the numbers, the USGA dashboard is here.

And of course, the USGA's round up page breaks down each qualifier with a scoring page, story and images. That page will come in handy for the resumption of play Tuesday in Ohio and Florida.

Cameron Morfit with ten takeaways from the day, headlined by Bryson DeChambeau re-qualifying for the U.S. Open. But even better news to those wanting a great local story with ties to the golf media, is this:

4. Pittsburgh's Mike Van Sickle, son of Sports Illustrated senior writer Gary Van Sickle, knows how to play Oakmont, having won a junior tournament there, and now he may get a return trip there for a slightly bigger event. Although Van Sickle lost a 3-for-2 playoff in Rockville, Md., the first alternate from that site earned a spot in Chambers Bay last year, and as any golf fan knows there's already one player (initials T.W.) who looks like he might need a sub.

Morfit also notes the amazing story of Jason Allred qualifying with ease as an alternate for the Powell, Ohio, qualifier and Luis Miguel Tabuena of the Philippines opening with a 29(!) at the San Francisco qualifier en route to a dominating performance.

James Raia with more on Tabuena, who he reports has played two career events on the PGA Tour, has full privileges on the Asian Tour and European Tour.

Beth Ann Nichols with more on NCAA individual champion Aaron Wise continuing his great play, qualifying as a pro.

Stan Awtrey reports on Ansley Golf Club qualifier Kent Bulle, a PGA Tour LatinoAmerica player.

Billy Hurley took the medalist honors in Maryland, Garrett Johnston reports.

David Dusek has the story of Chris Crawford sinking the day's clutch putt, and it's even better because it's on tape!

“It was a long putt, but I was happy to have a putt instead of having to get up and down and into a playoff,” Crawford said. “As 40-footers go, it wasn’t that tough; it was just a little outside the right edge. Fortunately, that ended up being the proper read. I hit a decent-enough putt, and it just caught the left lip and went down.”

The putt:

Jim McCabe with the nutty antics in Columbus, where UT's Scottie Scheffler made a mess of things. In a good way of course.

It was 8:55 p.m. and if you think that he’d have the practice area to himself, guess again. Daniel Summerhays was banging balls and so was University of Texas’ Scottie Scheffler. And on the practice green, Jason Allred, Patrick Rodgers and a guy by the name of Richard Schembechler II were rolling putts.

And with a rain delay, Stephanie Wei captured this image summing up the long day in Columbus.

Golfweek has put together a single gallery of all USGA images. Great stuff by all the lensmen and women. You can see their efforts by qualifier at the USGA page.
