Team Format Almost Back: Zurich Classic Field Set

Next week's much-anticipated PGA Tour return of a two-man team event is almost here and Sheldon Mickles has the commitments, pairings and preview.

As expected--and the fun of the Zurich Classic's team format--there are some strange bedfellows pairings. There is a strong concentration of star power with the Fowler-Day and Rose-Stenson pairings, but no shortage of fascinating combinations personality-wise.

Partnerships that got my attention...

Tyrrell Hatton/Jamie Donaldson

Jason Day/Rickie Fowler

Justin Rose/Henrik Stenson

Jordan Spieth/Ryan Palmer

Jimmy Walker/Sean O'Hair

Bubba Watson/J.B. Holmes

Russell Knox/Kevin Streelman

Hideki Matsuyama/Hideto Tanihara

Patrick Reed/Patrick Cantlay

Daniel Berger/Thomas Pieters

Wesley Bryan/Ryan Blaum

Alex Cejka/Soren Kjeldsen

Cody Gribble/Jim Herman

Smylie Kaufman/Harold Varner

Brooks Koepka/Chase Koepka

Steve Stricker/Jerry Kelly

Hudson Swafford/Harris English

Justin Thomas/Bud Cauley

Geoff Ogilvy/Ian Poulter

Kevin Chappell/Gary Woodland

Jamie Lovemark/Luke Donald

Ogilvy/Poulter catches my eye since it looks like Poulter at +2 will miss the cut today in San Antonio and I think that will cost him his Tour Card....correct?......looks like he was already in at NOLA anyway....perhaps on a sponsor exemption?

Ogilvy/Poulter caught my attention as well, but for a quite different reason; did the organisers ask Geoff to pair up with Bozo so as to ensure that the minimum IQ requirement was met?

Yeah the Poulter and Donald combos are odd. Strange they're not playing together.

If Lovemark can bomb it in the fairway, Donald's short game would make it fun...that was an absolute clinic at Harbor Town!

Surprised not to see a Day/Snedeker combo - they looked so comfortable and joyous in each other's company at the Masters.

I like Stricker/Kelly. Of course, I'm getting older myself...

BERGER/PIETERS

Hottest Wags team. Not even close.

I was hoping for the Tiger/Sergio pairing...darn back surgery.

The Bubba - Poulter team is a real missed opportunity.
I'll probably watch the Masters, the Open and this. That's it.

This is real golf, finding a partner. Finally.

Swafford / English: both players have two last names.

A few journos (Van Sickle, Sobel, Chamblee) have declared that Old P*rn Dog already holds the record for most PGA Tour wins as a number of Sam Snead's victories were in team events.

So, for their sake, I hope the victors are not awarded an official win or get Masters invites. Or, if Poulter wins, he doesn't regain is Tour exemption. Because, you know, this is like a total fraud ...

Chip Beck and Dale Douglass.

@Marky Mark

It's right on the tournament info page, if you are/were concerned.

Also - Old P*rn Dog is surely a strange nickname for Jack Nicklaus, no? Isn't Jack's record the acknowledged reason why the records were poured over/adjusted?

*pored/not poured. Gotta love Mondays.
