...let it be known that I am taking a Wednesday tour of the sexily named "Ball Plant 3" near Fairhaven, Massachusetts, followed by a press conference with Acushnet CEO Wally Uihlein and new Chairman Gene Yoon.

To my fellow scribblers attending the presser: if I don't appear at the Bay Club by noon sharp, it means my rants about technology got me sleeping with the future NXT's in a molten pot of Polybutadiene.

However, if I live to tell about it, expect some Tweets and video.

John Paul Newport makes the case above--distance gains have not fundamentally changed the game--and I'm not sure if this was the best week to write this story after a soft Plainfield looked completely overmatched by modern equipment (a stunning 31 players finished in double digits under par for 54 holes while the winner was 19-under for 3 rounds).

I remember the good ole days when I'd suggest distance gains were not good for the game and I'd get funny looks, nasty looks, and in general, suggestions I was a communist-sympathizer.

Even better were the times I'd suggest course setups were rigged to offset/emasculate/cover-up regulatory incompetance and I'd get the look folks used to give to those who suggested the moon landing was actually shot on a San Fernando Valley soundstage.
