When one comes to the quality of the bunkers and other hazards we pass into realm of much dispute and argument. Primarily bunkers should be sand bunkers purely, not composed of gravel, stones or dirt. The Daily Mail's Alan Dickson on Monty's grumpier-than-normal disposition Saturday:

Nobody does misery quite like Colin Montgomerie, whether it is huddling under a brolly in the rain or twiddling his putter like a cheerleader's baton in frustration at a missed opportunity on the 18th.

On days like this, when he was desperately struggling for a score that would make the cut, Monty's slightly bloodhound look of world-weariness can make Inspector Morse look like a stand-up comedian.

What's eating Europe' s captain for the forthcoming Ryder Cup? We cannot be sure, for after posting a decent 71 to end one over, the 47-year-old Scot declined to speak to those assembled to listen.

Monty was all smiles this morning when he arrived and I was just that lucky to be walking by the R&A clubhouse.
