Monty's Sanity Questioned And It's Only August

Derek Lawrenson on the absurdity of considering Bernhard Langer for this year's Ryder Cup squad:

Europe currently has four players in the world top 20 who are not in the team, and Monty has three wild card picks. What is he saying if he overlooks any of them and chooses Langer? How could you see that as anything other than undermining Europe's current crop?

Imagine if you'd sweated blood all through the qualifying process like Molinari, won a good tournament last month, just missed out on the team, then got beaten to a wild card by a man who hasn't given playing in this year's Ryder Cup a moment's thought. Wouldn't that be a grievous insult?

To be fair to Monty, he's probably mortified that someone would interpret it this way, for no-one cares more about the European game. But that's how it will be perceived at Gleneagles later this month if he picks Langer.
