Lawrenson: "Talk about playing the ugly American."

Derek Lawrenson opens his Daily Mail column by apologizing for a "daft" view from a column 15 years ago suggesting the Ryder Cup should extend to four days, and I have a feeling when he learns more of the facts surrounding the LPGA event in China, he may regret this pretty daft takedown of the classy Stacy Lewis, former Twitterer.

Saying Twitter provided a "public service" by allowing Lewis to make herself look bad, Lawrenson rages:

The Ricoh Women’s British Open champion let herself down badly in China on Sunday with a series of pitiful tweets after losing to local favourite Shanshan Feng, who had the temerity to eagle the last to win by one.

Talk about playing the ugly American. Lewis whined about the crowd and then bleated about Feng’s luck.

‘You’d like to win on a good shot, but obviously it wasn’t a good shot,’ she said, referring to Feng’s approach on the final hole that carried a water hazard by inches and then hit the flag.

Hours later, the 28-year-old piled petulance on top of ingratitude and lack of sportsmanship by signing off on Twitter with the words: ‘I’m sorry I say what I believe.’

At least she is now doing the right thing...and keeping such unpleasant thoughts to herself.

Considering many players were wearing masks to deal with the toxic air quality and Lewis was dealing with a crowd openly rooting against her--a normally deplorable act to the UK's finest scribes when it happens to their golfers--it's pretty hard to fault Lewis for her emotions.
