Bishop: Royal Portrush Would Be "Great" For First Int'l Major!

Appearing on Morning Drive Thursday, the PGA of America president said Royal Portrush would be a "great" first international venue if the PGA of America were to occasionally take their event overseas.

Ryan Lavner reports.

“Royal Portrush would be a great first international major,” he said. “I think given the powerful effect that Irish golfers have on the professional game today, that might be a good place to start.”

The Northern Ireland club hosted the 1951 Open Championship and has been considered for a return, though there have been doubts about how seriously the R&A is taking Portrush due to a litany of factors, none of which have to do with the quality of the venue. As you can tell from Darius Oliver's review, H.S. Colt's design is one of the world's great links. But it's also not likely to host a PGA in say, 2020 when the Olympics make the summertime chaotic and really the only time you'd want to play a championship there.

In other words, Bishop is doing his best to make old buddy Peter Dawson's life as difficult as possible!
