D.A. Points Channeled His Inner Bill Murray Down The Stretch

Jason Sobel on the mind games D.A. Points played to keep himself loose down the stretch in the Shell Houston Open.

Since his first win came at Pebble Beach with Pro-Am partner Bill Murray, Points had good reason to go slightly goofy to get the win:

“So what I kind of came up with today was I would just give a really cheesy grin to my caddie because as it's been noted I can be hard on myself and I don't do as much smiling on the golf course as I probably should. So every time he wasn't looking at me, I'd kind of look at him with this big, cheesy grin. He would start laughing and I would instantly laugh. That was just enough of the stuff to break the tension.”

And then there's his mother's putter. John Strege recounts the great story of Mary Jo Points caddying for her son in the Masters Par-3 contest in 2011 and also for giving him a PING putter he's used off-and-on to great success, including this week.

"I brought it with me this week because I just had been putting so bad," he said. "I thought maybe I'll pull this old putter out of the garage and maybe it will have some magic in it."
