Rory Exits Stage Left, Takes Some Heat

I'm going to chalk this one up to how much access the top players give--especially the usually gracious Rory McIlroy--but there was some annoyance with McIlroy for not stopping to talk with the press after a double bogey and U.S. Open missed cut.

Mark Cannizzaro in the New York Post:

In the case of McIlroy, he did not perform well on the golf course or off it. Unlike Mickelson and Fowler — who showed their usual class, maturity and accountability afterward — McIlroy refused to speak to the media after his round was finished.

Brian Wacker at GolfDigest.com:

The bag slung over his shoulder, the 27-year-old Northern Irishman walked down the hall, briefly stopping to sign a pin flag, and then headed down the stairs and out the door, past a throng of reporters and into the player parking lot, where he hopped into his Lexus courtesy car and promptly exited stage left.

McIlroy declined to speak to reporters. He didn’t need to. His annoyed stride and expression said enough.

McIlroy at least disposed of the unfortunate day-glow hat worn throughout the round.
