The Donald Declares His Course The Greatest In The World...After Nine Holes

A wire story from The Scotsman was not nearly as fun as the printed version I got to read over breakfast, so I'll have to dig up a few of the quotes in there.

But for now, this was great fun from opening day of Trump International Golf Links where the developer declared it was the greatest in the world before he'd even finished his round!

After completing the first nine holes with George O'Grady and Sandy Jones, the chief executives of the European Tour and the UK PGA respectively, Mr Trump called it the "greatest golf course anywhere in the world".

"We're having a great time, the course is playing great and the weather has held up," he said. "Colin loves the course and he's playing really well, he's a great player and a great guy."

Though by the sounds of this Monty quote from another story by Martin Dempster, he was being paid to be there. Not that such a thing would influence his views.

“We are similar in that way and it’s why I will never give up as a competitor, no matter what I am doing. For instance, it’s not right to be trying to beat the boss [Donald Trump] today, but I will be trying.”

George O'Grady, head of the European Tour, loved it, as quoted in this Dempster story on the prospects of major events at Trump International.

“It’s a man’s golf course – it’s meant for the highest level of play,” acknowledged O’Grady as he gazed down the first fairway of the Martin Hawtree-designed layout.

“What he [Trump] and I have agreed is that, when we are both ready, we would try and persuade someone to come here – and I don’t think it will be too difficult a task. There’s the Scottish Open to think about and I’m sure that’s in the mind of our sponsors, but there are other events as well. It’s certainly capable of taking the biggest and best, I would say.
“It is a unique golf course and, once the photographs of it are seen, many people will want to come here.”

From what I have read, I have feeling many people will want to come there ONCE
Paying a small fortune for green fees plus losing a small bucket may not encourage a lot of repeat business.

I'm sure the main defense of the golf course will be the wind . . . being a Trump product, the term blowhard comes immediately to mind.

It's like attempting to have a conversation with a brick but I'll say it anyway: Doesn't the tone-deaf Trump realize just how ludicrous it sounds to proclaim his project "the greatest?" Any more than there is a a "most beautiful woman in the world," a "greatest city in the world," or a "greatest restaurant in the world." The judgment is purely subjective and while you may think so, I may disagree. Trump has bleated this absurdity ever since the project started and it's certainly no more true today. I'm sure it's a fine track, one that will be "enjoyed" by a handful of well-heeled international travelers. Why anyone in America could give a flying flip is completely beyond me.

"We're having a great time, the course is playing great and the weather has held up..." Sounds just like the mayor of Amity (Murray Hamilton) in "Jaws." For those who don't remember: www(dot)youtube(dot)com/watch?v=1iEuJ4WM3oU

Geoff, you may not care, but you accidentally a word in the first sentence.

I can't wait to see the first reviews come in--I think it'll certainly be dramatic and please the masochists of the golf world, and it can't all be terrible.

Donald needs to lose 45 pounds.

To be the greatest you must look like your not a fat slob.

Would really like to see an objective evaluation of the golf course, without the Trump attacks. @A3 - so he needs to lose some weight ? So do lots of us, don't know that is a reason to be mocked or have one's business endeavors attacked.

Well if nothing else it has been given a good start, it’s in Scotland and it’s near the sea, the proof of its quality will be IMO how long before someone starts to modify it. I do wonder about the movement of the sands in that area, but time will tell on that one.

morrow is exactly right, it is in Scotland, close to the sea and there is probably a bar in the clubhouse, that is a tough combination to mess up.
@ Iain Macmillan

Interesting link.

So then, the "Great Dunes of Scotland" may get the final word by, quite literally burying Trump's vanity project. Bring it on!
Trump is the embodiment the old saying "last year I was conceited but this year I'm just perfect"

You must first get over the fake Trump that he puts on display for interesting business sense and reasoning. The fake Trump we are all pretty allergic to is rather annoying. The real Trump, the off camera Trump, is actually from all indications a generally interested, caring, and sincere fellow. This info comes to me from his members at Bedminster whom he obviously can let his guard down for. Hes very much at home there.

He is a details man and he certainly doesnt suffer the foolish lightlt but the reports were glowing. He was reported to be friendly, with his members, generous with his staff (was told he will hand out $100 per year of service to staff that he engages), and very much the fastest golfer on the planet.

He might be tiresome and a blowhard but that person isnt the only Donald Trump. I think your words of contempt for someone you do mot know personally are curious and just that, words. I challenge you to put your words in to action when standing in his presence cause your tune is now more tiresome than The Fake Donald.

Ardmorearie ... a Trump lickspittle?
Fake Donald?????? WTF. If part of his persona is being a fake, why take a phoney at his word? Blah.

While it's a joke to declare any golf course the greatest in the world, I'll be there on Monday 23rd and will try to give a more objective view.

This course does not have a waterfall. How good can it be?

Thank you Peter. You took the words out of my mouth. Objevtivity is all about golf!

In ref to the link about the natural demise of Trump Scotland, thank you Iain for sharing,, it might be more than a little of what goes around comes around irony if mom au naturele takes her dunes back!

Brian S I can mock Trump cause the guy is a freakin tool. Give me a break, just cause someone makes money he cannot be made fun of. Geez he is fat, act like a imbecile with his greatest comments and his birther idiocy. Trump is a fat slob and tacky. There i said it twice, boo frickin hoo.
07.11.2012 | Unregistered CommenterA3
Gee, I thought A3 was being nice...45 pounds seemed a little low.
07.12.2012 | Unregistered CommenterKelly Blake Moran
Why does Trump seem to wear the exact same outfit every time I have the misfortune of seeing pictures or video of him playing golf? White shirt, rumbled off white/tan pants, back belt and that horrible pointed peak red hat. What would Marty Hackell say?
