Daly Says "The Media" To Blame For Underreporting His Litany Of Health Problems

GolfMagic.com’s Andy Roberts listened to John Daly on the Full Send podcast so we don’t have to and shared a key exchange. The topic was Tiger’s jab at John Daly for taking a cart and a purported apology from Woods at the recent PNC Championship dinner.

Sitting behind a beer, ashtray for his diabetes-assisting cigarettes and a plate of fried chicken, Daly offered this regarding Tiger:

"Yeah, but he didn’t know the facts because the media, ‘the media’ (sarcastic gesture) didn’t tell him I had diabetes and I had a bad two knees and my hips out and all this stuff," Daly said on the podcast.

"He apologized to me at dinner the other night. I mean, he’s fine. I love Tiger."

You know John is right. No one could look at him sitting there smoking, drinking and looking like a man just a few years under 100 and know he’s unwell.

He’s also right about “the media” having a key job to do: to probe and delve into the personal health records of pro golfers to help keep Tiger Woods informed of what ails them. You know, because Tiger reads so much media and just adores privacy breaches.

It seems Long John is also claiming he was one of the few people to text Tiger after his most recent car accident. Daly sent an eloquent missive.

He added: "Look, I was the only guy that texted him going through all this. Besides JT (Justin Thomas) and a couple of other players, when he had that wreck, I was the first one to say ‘Hey man, get better and do good.’

"And at the dinner, when I was Santa Claus, he says, ‘Man, thank you so much for the texts. It means a lot to me.’ And that meant a lot to me."

But if he had to thank you for the texts there’s a strong likelihood this means he never responded in the first place. No? Yes?

Anyway, I’m sure the vast media entourage covering PGA Tour Champions action will do better in the future by making sure to probe for every detail of Daly’s health issues. This will keep Tiger better informed and the media will be doing its job in John’s world.

And Heaven knows, Tiger could not have otherwise known of Daly’s issues.

If you’d like to subject yourself to more torture, the interview synopsis on YouTube should give you some idea what kind of time waste you’re in for:

Epic show this week boys. Legendary golfer John Daly sits down with Bob, Kyle, and Salim at the original Hooters in Tampa, FL. to cover everything from John’s partying stories, beating Tiger Woods with his son, loving “Daddy Trump,” and much more.

Mask Advocate John Daly Rebuffs Presidential Debate Mask Mandate

Never one to be entirely consistent, former PGA and Open Champion John Daly took in the 2020 Presidential debate as a guest of Donald Trump. Along with buddy Kid Rock, the pair had to be asked to pull up masks, as mandated by the debate commission, Des Bieler reports.

Not long after the two settled into their seats at Belmont University’s Curb Event Center, they were reportedly asked to put on masks. Daly and Kid Rock complied, but to judge from a number of photos taken of them, they weren’t always assiduous in keeping them pulled up.

Daly, diabetic and battling bladder cancer, was a mask advocate in April and withdrew from the PGA Championship over California’s COVID-19 infection rate.

His post last night from the debate:

John Daly Has A Coronavirus Cure, Because Of Course He Does

Posted on the Trump Organization YouTube page, John Daly offers his cure to the COVID-19 virus. If you’re not looking to hit the play button below, the shortcut: Belvedere and McDonald’s Diet Coke. Just one a day. The key, of course, is the McDonald’s Diet Coke in the way New York pizza is influenced by the tap water there.

I do believe we’ve bottomed out, though exactly how I’m not sure…unless, of course Long John was joking, in which case we’ve hit a new low in different ways.

R&A: Terrain Unsuitable For Buggies Cited As Reason For Denying John Daly's Request

As with Bethpage Black, carts, aka buggies when we move overseas, are not allowed at any time. As noted by the R&A in squashing John Daly’s request for a cart.

From Alistair Tait’s Golfweek report, that also suggests the R&A had other reasons besides steeper-than-normal dunes:

“We believe that walking the course is an integral part of the Championship and is central to the tradition of links golf which is synonymous with The Open. We must also ensure that, as far as possible, the challenge is the same for all players in the field.

“The terrain at Royal Portrush is not suited to buggies and indeed the club itself does not permit their use. We have a serious concern that some parts of the course, where there are severe slopes and swales, would be inaccessible.”

PGA Approves John Daly's Use Of Cart At Walking-Only Bethpage Black

AP’s Doug Ferguson reports on the PGA of America’s approval of a cart for 1991 winner John Daly, who is going to try to play next week’s championship at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course.

"I hope I don't get a lot of grief from the fans," Daly said in a telephone interview. "My knee is screwed. I had the meniscus cut out. I have osteoarthritis so bad ... I can walk up a hill, I just can't walk down one."

The PGA of America said Daly applied to use a cart through its American with Disabilities Act policy and provided "the requisite information to allow for a review of his request by the PGA's medical team."

Daly tells Ferguson he’s been suffering from diabetes and dizzy spells during a drive to Birmingham for the Tradition. Daly has subsequently set up shop in front of slot machines in Mississippi hoping to improve enough to make the drive to New York.

Bethpage’s Black course is walking only during its season.

"The Daly Show has long since become tediously repetitive viewing"

Screen Shot 2018-07-02 at 10.05.28 PM.png

Eamon Lynch files a tough but necessary take down of John Daly's U.S. Senior Open tantrum over not getting a cart.

After reviewing some of Long John's greatest WD hits--only 11 signed scorecard rounds in USGA events--Lynch says there is nothing left to like about Daly's act.

For a time, Daly was an easy guy to root for among the khaki clones that populate the PGA Tour, a mullet-sporting, beer-bellied, working-class guy upending a country club world. His many struggles with addiction – which he hid from no one – earned him tremendous support from fans and more than a few passes for conduct unbecoming.

But the Daly Show has long since become tediously repetitive viewing.

He’s 52 now, but maturity seems no nearer at hand. It’s easy to understand why tournament organizers have bestowed so many sponsor’s invites on a man who hasn’t had playing status for years. When he pitches up at events, TV announcers still serve up the old chestnuts: Folks love to see him, he draws a crowd, he generates the oohs and aahs. That’s all true, of course, but it’s also true of police car chases. And people watch both hoping for a crash.

Daly is listed as part of the field for this week's Greenbrier Classic. Presumably able to play without the aid of a cart.

John Daly: Americans Need To Get On Donald Trump's Wagon

Normally I'd suggest John Daly abstain from wagon references given his multiple climbs on and off the wagon, but the man loves his President Trump and the job the 45th president is doing.

Ryan Ballengee, reporting from the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship That'll Eventually Be Won By Bernhard Langer, quotes the 2-time major champion loving the effort of his friend Donald Trump, unofficial host at Trump National DC.

“There’s been a lot of things go on with the Democrats that people just want to ignore now,” he said. “They don’t, they just want to pick on my buddy. Let him do his job and just see what he does. He’s doing great so far.”

And the wagon talk...

“He’s the President of the United States,” he said. “I think people need to get on his wagon and ride with him and let him do what he’s doing and leave him alone. It’s not going to change for at least, you know, this year and three more.”

John Daly At 50: An Appropriately Fun Retrospective

Kind of glad Herb Wind didn't have to do a New Yorker piece on this birthday.

John Daly gets a more appropriate retrospective from the SkratchTV gang. Oh, and Fuzzy owes Long John $150k according to USA Today's Josh Peter, money that will be well spent no doubt.

PS - Long John, two majors...shouldn't he be on a World Golf Hall of Fame ballot?
